Monocarboxylate transporters (MCT) are involved in the movement of metabolically important substances including lactate. MCT1 and MCT4 are the most important for lactic acid transport. MCT1 is found most abundantly within slow twitch fibers while MCT4 is found more in fast twitch fibers. These transporters allow the transfer of lactate from muscles into the blood and mitochondria.
